J&K MBBS, MD counseling only after SC judgment: BOPEE

March 12, 2022 by Malik Musaib Leave a Comment

Srinagar: The J&K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) on Thursday said the counseling of both NEET Undergraduate and Postgraduate qualifiers in J&K would start only after the Supreme Court hearing on a pending plea, the one that has stalled the counseling process across the country.

The results of UG NEET were declared on November 1, 2021 , nearly two months after the exams were conducted. The admission to MBBS course has been delayed across India, earlier due to postponement of exams owing to COVID19 and later due to delay in results. Now, due to a plea in the Supreme Court challenging the revision of income criteria for the Economically

Weaker Section (EWS), the counseling process has not been allowed to start. For NEET PG candidates as well, the counseling is yet to start due to the same plea.

In J&K, the aspirants for MBBS seats in J&K’s medical colleges have been awaiting counseling and allotment process to begin. Many aspirants, those whose merit standing is on the borderline, have expressed concern that the delay in counseling may cause them to lose a chance to apply at medical colleges outside India.

However, J&K BOPEE, on Thursday said there was “no question” of going against SC and the merit list would be declared only when the SC clears the decks for the process to begin. Speaking to Greater Kashmir, Chairman BOPEE Shariq Ahmed Raina said the merit list was ready but could not be made public due to the pendency of EWS plea in SC. The matter, he said, has been discussed with J&K Government and it has been decided to conform to how the rest of the country was proceeding on the counseling. “If the SC gives a nod in the morning, we will issue the list in the evening,” he said, advising that the aspirants must not worry about the delay in admission.

The Union Health Ministry has requested SC for an early listing and hearing of the plea and clearing of decks for the start of the counseling process. On October 21, the SC had asked the GoI whether the limit of Rs 8 lakh annual income, fixed for determining the EWS category, needs discussion and revision.

In July this year GoI amended the existing provisions and framed 27 percent reservation for OBC and 10 percent for the EWS category in 15 percent UG and 50 percent PG All India Quota seats (MBBS/BDS and MD/MS/MDS) with effect from the current academic session 2021-22.
